How can specific inventory be blocked from use?

Dynamics AX2012 has a new and useful construct to block inventory.  This method is automatically used with quality orders but can also be used manually.  It allows operators to stop any picking transactions against a specific item and location.  Additional item dimensions can also be applied if the item has active dimension setup in the dimension groups.  This could be used to temporarily freeze inventory if a quality problem is suspected, or might be used by warehouse personnel to control which items should or should not be picked.

Consider the on-hand information item “00100”, one hundred are on hand in several different batches and locations.  A warehouse operator notices some damage to the packaging on the items in batch “0000002_077” at location “FLOOR”.  The operator decides to block this inventory from use until the quality of the item can be confirmed.

Navigate using the following path:

/Inventory and warehouse management/Periodic/inventory blocking

Notice that item 001001 is being blocked for use at location Floor for batch 00000002_077.  Any other items will be left un-blocked.

The on-hand inquiry now revels that the inventory has set this item to “physical reserved” and it can no longer be used.  The system will disallow any attempts to use this inventory.

The item can quickly be un-blocked as required on the verification of its condition by deleting the blocking record.

The on-hand inquiry now shows that the item is no longer reserved.
